I needed that.

Our school culture has sucked lately.  I have a colleague who sucks.  Literally.  The soul and the life out of our department and sometimes, when I let him, my day and my love for my job.

Today a student of mine wrote the following, and in doing so, he whooshed back my love for my job.

When asked what his planets and solar systems are - metaphorically, in connection to Sherman Alexie's Absolute True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, he answered the following.

"My planets in my solar system are my best friends. [Then he lists their names and mentions his cousins and his dog.]  While I feel the adults I care about are galaxies, expanding their knowledge, expanding their area of influence and creating a nice environment. (You're one of those galaxies Ms. Buotte.  Like a giant galaxy built around mountain biking and perfect grammar.)"

I wish they knew how much we value these little asides, how much they matter to us.

  1. They may not know now, but they will someday. And I am so glad the Universe, and this one student, gave you what you needed, when you needed it.
