Hike up Avery via Safford Notch

Hiked this with Al when I got back from NC.  It was about 14 miles, as we had to walk in a couple of miles of road because of a big blowdown across the road.  Sunday, April 21, 2013.  This is the base of the fire tower they burned down not long ago -- and to the left, that big rock -- that is the one with the Myron Avery plaque (gotta love Myron; he is the man).

See Katahdin?  I vividly remember being on the summit of Avery one afternoon - alone - as I heard the clicking of ski poles and the rhythmic, focused breathing of a thru-hiker, Skitz.  Katahdin was out that day, and I had the pleasure of pointing it out to him.  It was his first view of the "end" of the trail.  He only had about 160 miles left after over 2000...  It was pretty cool to share that with him.  I was alone on the summit for this day too - Al opted to not summit and wait below treeline.  The going was really rugged that day -- still a lot of snow -- so the dogs (hers included) and I made the trip to the top.

Once back out to the road, she and I collapsed on the ground and chilled in the sun before making the two mile walk to the car and to the beer.

Happy to be stationary and in the sun.  Need a nice long hike like that soon.  Probably on the solstice.  Think I will try to arrange a nice long traverse on the AT with Jim or someone picking me up a good distance from where I left my car...  Yeah, that will be just right after having kids on the AT and finishing the school year.

  1. Hey, I think I got this thing to work. I now have a g mail account for work- we do an info share thing with the patrol from snow safety, publishing photos, snow pits, and Forecaster notes via Google Drive. Now I get to yack back at you regarding your posts- bonus. I'll start by saying i love the photo of Mom in the Rain- very nice. We are busy here putting in a garden- I have built raised beds, and screened in wood frame covers to go over them. the covers have wire mesh, and we will be able to cover the boxes at night for warmth. I was hoping to be done by now but after most of it was built, I decided that the whole project would look a lot better if we stained the boxes the color of the house. so, many hours of staining now... i think by the end of next weekend the project should be DONE- hopefully including the irrigation. OK, gotta start staining- worked in the yard this morning, biked a bit yesterday, as did Polly, who crashed and dinged herself pretty good- nothing long term, but some scrapes and bruises. we soaked at a hot springs after, and she got to parade around in her bathing suit with big scratches all over her! It hurts today, and linden didn't sleep much due to a stuffy nose, so she was up with him a bunch last night- she is grumpy today, with good reason. Take Care- check for the northern lights- i came home late from rob's Friday night and they were out here. Supposedly the next year and a half is going to be good for seeing them- lots of solar storms forecast, so the pointy heads say...
