Dixie Comes Home

Birthday fun at Julie's on Saturday night. GOOD drinks (gotta love Craig's martinis), good dinner and a lot of laughs. Went for an excellent ski in Range State Park with my sister's dog, Mia, in the morning. Got out before most, and that was great. Was surprised at the snowmobile etiquette down in almost southern Maine. Up here when I see biles on the trail, they ALWAYS wave; they slow down. Sometimes they even sidle up, shut off their machines and have a chat. I only saw two in the park, so maybe they were out-of-staters or something, but they did not wave, did not slow down and just buzzed Mia and me as we stood off on the side of the trail. Pretty disappointing. After the ski, we headed to Beantown -- well, just Logan. The trip went well, and we found "Building 62" without issue. From there, things got a little scary and very exciting.

The trip to Boston.

The oh-so-welcoming door where you go to pick up your "cargo".
This place was nuts. They have a board of photographs of several different dogs they have shipped. And they also have a few others -- no kidding -- a kangaroo, goats, a pig, A LION and A TIGER!! Can you even imagine if my little rescue bambino was on a plane with a LION? (Incidentally, she is such a skinny minnie, she would not even be worth a lion's time.)

So I finally get to go into this big garage and get her. She is way far back in the farthest corner of her kennel -- petrified. I think just talking sweet to her will lure her out. Ha. She was not budging. There was poop all over the kennel, and she smelled really bad. Just as I was beginning to make progress and gain an inch with her, an airline worker scraped another kennel across the cement floor, sending poor puppy back into the corner. So I finally pulled her out and tried to make her walk. She would not. In her defense, there was this REALLY enthusiastic family with young children that was there picking up a dog themselves and they were LOUD and obnoxious (as any kid would be picking up a dog) -- there was a lot of commotion. There was poop hanging from her bum (lovely) and I just scooped her up in my arms and hauled her out of there. I was worried about the poop, as I thought it could be a sign that she ate something bad and was unable to digest it. I walked her around the warm, welcoming, quiet, nature laden (not, not, not and NOT) parking lot of "Building 62" and tried to help her to feel better. Not much luck. Jim finally was out with the kennel and had Luna. As soon as she saw Luna she ran for her and jumped up and started licking her face all over. It was the sweetest thing. I was almost crying, but the cold kept the tears from flowing. We walked around and after Jim got me some paper towels I did my "home vet" routine and got right in there. I was able to pull it off and she looked a little more lovable after that. From there I took her to the Honda and she jumped right in, like she just knew. This was the VERY FIRST (and you know, not the last) photo I took of her and it was taken about 45 seconds after she launched into the car. Awwwwww. Scared little puppy girl.

Dog ball.

The shot below makes me think of Laura. She told me that one of her "old" dogs would not look at the "new" dog for two days and not to be concerned. Luna is trying hard not to accept that this smelly little bony puppy is in her car on her dog bed. She has come around a VERY little in the 40+ hours we have had her, and I have high hopes.

Yesterday, we took the fam and the camera on a walk by the river. Love this walk, as I can leave right from my house with no car and be in the woods and beside the Sandy in less than five minutes. She was definitely cold, but she seemed to enjoy being out and about in the snow and with Luna and us. I cannot wait to fatten her up. She looks like a walking skeleton. The surgery she went through from eating the towel caused her to lose a ton of weight. When I exclaimed to Stacey about how thin she was (foster mom) Stacey said, "You should have seen her a week ago." She was able to get Dixie to gain three pounds in a week. I am taking her to the vet today (in Turner) to find out just what I can do to put some weight on her in a healthy way. She is so cold when she is out and about in the Maine winter (coming from 60 degrees in Houston to one of the colder days this winter is a little unfortunate).

And below are pics from that walk - where Dixie learns about snow, ice, deep ravines, the river, dead crows, the sound of chickens and the adventure of life with us. Yay.

Cannot wait to FATTEN and STRENGTHEN her up : )
