#AT1Day

Breakfast first - then ready to go!

Site of trail work this spring with DHS students.

Up out of the trees

So Backpacker magazine had this idea to celebrate the AT.  They asked anyone interested to sign up to hike a section of trail on June 20, 2015.  The idea was to get the whole trail hiked in one day.  I signed up to do a short section that included Bemis Mountain and the Bemis Lean-To.  This is the trail where I had students in late May doing trail work.  (I need to post about that trip too!)  620 people signed up and a lot of the trail, but not all, was covered.  We did okay in Maine, but did not get all of it - maybe next year.  I loved being out with my little guy and Phoenix covering these miles though.  It was a perfect day - clear, warm, breezy and dry.  I knew the actual Solstice would be spent celebrating Father's Day and Marlin's 93rd birthday, so I treated Saturday as a very close second!  It was awesome.

The mountains of Weld - Big and Little Jackson and Tumbledown is behind the trees.

Lilly blooming on the trail.

Inside the lean-to - he had just woken up, and I had been writing in the trail journal.  I looked up from writing (I was sitting near the fire pit) and saw these beautiful blue eyes and this super calm guy just looking out at me - pretty cool place for him to wake up, I think.

Lunch spot - on the baldish summit of 2nd Mountain of Bemis chain - he is so freaking mobile, but not yet that in control that it was an adventure getting lunch into him and keeping him safe after I let him crawl all around on the rock.

All packed up and ready to go after having lunch.

I let him drink for a bit while I walked - when it dropped down the front of me, I was able to snag it with one hand without dropping it - THAT will never happen again : )

Another nap on the way down to the car.

This is what he looked like before he woke up - completely crashed in the lean-to.

Summer Vacation is treating me just fine so far : )  Women's Mountain Bike Ride up in Carrabassett this evening - meeting Al early so we can get at least an hour in before joining up with the other ladies.  First time leaving him with someone other than family -- ahhhh!  Only for about 3 hours but still...
