Alison planned an excellent day for us. Holy cow - so much fun. We met them in Richmond (they put in the boat downriver - in Bath). They drove up the Kennebec and picked us up. Al's dad toured us all around - taking us through Boothbay all slow and close to the actual harbor - explained Merry-Meeting Bay and all the different rivers coming in. We swam and drank and ate and had such a great, great day. So thankful for my life in Maine. It was an amazing way to spend a Saturday. And tomorrow - oh tomorrow. She and I are doing a good-sized mountain bike ride up to Burnt Mountain trailhead and then hiking that - it will be a phenomenal way to spend the day. It is one of her last before she heads back to UMF. My summertime days are numbered too. Not complaining - love my job and feel very thankful for the time off to recuperate and recharge. With the news we had Monday, we need it. There will be a seriousness to our homeroom reunion that I am not looking forward to. The week's news of bicycling families getting taken out by drunk drivers, my homeslice (what I call my homeroom kids) being killed in a dirt-bike accident, along with the 9 year old boy who was killed by an out-of-control car near Port Cylde, compounded by the still missing, presumed dead, thru-hiker Gerry (Inchworm) makes me realize our lives are precious and fragile. I need no more reminders. I can realize this truth through happy times like this day on the boat, or the sunset hike this past Sunday, or a fun day planned tomorrow.
Barry and Jack
Al and her mom. As she greeted me at the boat ramp she says, "Don't hold my mom's hat against her." Ha - against her - maybe when I stop laughing! : )
A sweet ride - most comfortable boat I have been on, I think.
Now, I just hope I can sleep tonight to get some rest for my epic day tomorrow.
