Gotta love good friends with husbands with GREAT ideas! My colleague and friend lives in Byron and often heads out to Little Swift River and Big Swift River Ponds to fish - they are stocked, catch and release ponds. Her family knows the trail well. And her husband had the excellent idea of following me up to the Height of the Land so I could leave my car there, enabling me to do a 10 mile hike out, in one direction. This is a rarity in my life; I am often hiking an out-and-back, so this was a treat. With my pack full of two tarps and a bunch of rope, we then headed to Little Swift River pond the alternate way. Once to the pond, we hung for a bit and then I headed up into the woods (above the privy) and stashed the goods in a hole at the base of a tree. I covered it all with leaves and sticks and then headed out toward the Height of the Land. It was a gorgeous day, and Dixie and I were happy to be there.
Trout Lily
Three different wildflowers were blooming while I was out: Trillium, Trout Lily and this sweet, little flower whose name I know not. It is small and white - and it has perfect pink stripes on its petals. They are all in this shot, but with my "auto" camera, I was unable to get a close-up of the unknown sweet flower. Gotta ask JB about that one; she's my plant identifier.
Always do and always will LOVE this section of the trail.
Height of the Land - Rangeley.
A good good day out.
